Jellyroll Joy

Hi - Kel here again and I want to know:

Do you jellyroll?

It seems that the lovely people who spend their days making quilt fabric will never tire of ways to tempt us. In the beginning there was yardage and there were scraps. Then quilting seemed to have a revival of sorts and spawned a whole industry of quiltmaking fabric, supplies and books.

Then we had fat quarters - a great way to build up a wide collection of different colours and patterns. Fat quarters are such a tempting impulse buy too as they don't cost much and you can buy one just because you love it. A quick note for non-quilters to demystify the fat quarter: picture a square yard (or metre, whatever your preference) of fabric. Now divide it into four equal strips (cutting across the width) - that's a long quarter, which is fine for cutting out little pieces or more strips. If, instead, you divide it into 4 equal blocks (cutting across the width and down the length) and you have fat quarters, a more versatile piece for getting different shapes and sizes cut out.

Then we had charm packs and fat eighths and then jelly rolls and layer cakes and I don't know what else. All so lovely to look at, but sometimes hard to use. You either need to buy everything you need for the next quilt, or you use up a selection of a bundle leaving unwieldy scraps to store forever, or you don't know how much quilt a jellyroll will make. Hence the book market that follows the introduction of each of these pretty bundles - 12 Quilts from Fat Quarters, 10 Jelly Roll Quilts for the Weekend, etc (by the way, those are made up titles, at least I hope so!)

 I am always tempted by the jellyrolls, but was never sure where to begin. I was looking at jellyroll books at the quilt show and realised that I probably knew enough strip-based patterns to work something out for myself. Then my lovely friend bought me this jellyroll (the photo is from The Quilt Room in Dorking - my one of my local fabric haunts). 

I was going to do something simple, possibly a simplified log cabin, or bordered four-patches, but then I saw this beautiful quilt on flickr. I can work out how to do it, so that is the new plan. I had hoped to have some blocks ready tonight to show you, but plans for the Mr's birthday got in the way (which is a good thing in my opinion!).

I've sorted out the strips into pairs mainly matching the colour but mixing up the scale. The quilt will blend from red to pink to blue to green to yellow. The first step is to sew together each pair of strips along their length, then cut across these to end up with little two-tone bricks - joining pairs of these will give my four-patches.

SIMPLE THINGS JULY - ACHIEVEMENT

 For our Simple Things project this month, we are delighted to showcase a wonderful art journal

by a guest designer Jayne Loughlin.

    First entry of my Art Journal – Achievement  By Jayne Loughlin

  

Hiya, I’m Jayne Loughlin. I’m married with 3 girls & work p/t in a Garden Centre. I also help run a craft blog for Fiskars called www.fiskarettes.co.uk . 

I was so proud to be asked to create a project for IACW .  I love the variety of the posts & can’t believe the ladies on the blog better their projects time and time again. 

I was asked to do an entry for Simple Things titled ‘Achievement’ & thought this would be ideal to kick start an Art Journal a friend gave me for my Birthday. My friend had decorated the book and added an entry & I love it but haven’t done anything with it & I’ve had it for nearly 3 weeks !   This type of craft is really new to me and very much out of my box seeing as I really don’t play with paints, or Gesso, and have never done anything like an Art Journal in my life !  I usually Scrapbook & dabble with cards, not to mention my Tiara making for my website, but I wanted to give it a try.

Items needed : Notebook , watercolours, patterned paper, photos, Gesso, brushes, black, orange & red felts, black acrylic paint, chequered stamp, scissors, adhesive.

So to start off on the first pages I used watercolours (2 different colours) and painted a frame then filled in the middle. It was really slapdash and not painted perfectly (see below)

 

Then I chose some photos and cut around the images. These were placed on the pages but not glued down yet...I  drew light squiggly lines with pencil where I was going to put the journaling. The photos helped with the placement of the lines, You might be able to just see them faintly.

 

Next on gloss paper I drew a thin strip & coloured it in with a chequered effect . This was repeated as shown in the photo below. Trim these two lines and glue to the top of your pages (i’ll trim edges overlapping pages later)

 

A few triangles cut out of patterned paper were glued to the bottom of the stripy lines. Now paint the whole pages and strips of paper you have glued down with Gesso in messy brush strokes  (this helps lessen the brightness of the colours ) Leave to dry.

I’ve now put a puddle of Black Acrylic paint onto a paper plate and stamped chequer board patterns using a stamp around some of the edges.

Again paint with more Gesso using messy paint strokes.

 

Glue the photos on top of the page and Journal what you would like to say straight onto the page...I like to not write notes so that the thoughts are from within; it can look like someone else writes this if you plan what to say and not be true to your feelings. There’s nothing wrong with this however, if you get a little worried writing off the cuff and want to jot notes down -  its your preference.

Last but not least I’ve doodled a little on the top border with the title Achievement.

I hope you all like it, and hope it inspires at least one person to create an Art Journal...If I can do it anyone can .

Hiya Claire here with my take on the word of the month - achievement...

I'm using a lot of quotes in my little pizza box album & this quote from Walt Disney really struck a chord with me, The way to get started is to quit talking and start doing.

This is something I should remember, there are many things I would like to achieve but I never get round to doing anything about it as other things crop up... so from here on in less talking, more doing :)

The quote is written on 2 little tickets cut with a Sizzix machine & a Tim Holtz Alteration die, they slide into a little pocket on the page

 

The pocket was made by using a strip of spotty patterned paper, stuck with double sided sticky tape but with a gap for the tickets to slot into, I then used some more die cut tickets to mount the title then added the dictionary definition & a small metal key...

Hi Debbie here with my page on achievement.

I decided to focus on five things that have required perseverance or confidence to give it a go, and things I have enjoyed. Working in an infant school, being a mum, being a wife and creating a home, growing my own vegetables and becoming one of the girls on It's a Creative World.

 


I ended up making a double page as I wanted to put more detail into this page.

I started off by stamping a green background on my pages.  

I then stamped a flower pattern randomly over the top masking off the area for my title.

I cut flowers using a sizzix die and and circular punches and inked the edges with brown ink.

The tags were made using sizzix dies and are decorated to represent each achievement I wanted to remember. The tags are decorated with quickutz dies, stuck on with velcro and there is hidden journalling on the reverse.

The tags were a little too purple, so I toned them down using dusty concord distress inks.

The flowers were layered using foam dots to create a 3D effect.

I have really enjoyed making this entry, and I am really enjoying looking at everyone else's entries. Why don't you come along and join in?

Eleanor here, still working on my quilt squares, and for this one I used both paint and embroidery thread.

I personally feel that one of the biggest and most important achievements for any of us is to have learnt to read. Of course we all did it, for some of us it was so long ago we can barely remember, but a huge achievement nonetheless.

I taught all of my children to read, and the books in the reading scheme we used at home have remained very special, to them, and to me. All three are now avid readers, and I thought that the word this month was a good way of preserving a memory of these books. Now that I've started, I don't want to stop, and I'm working on my second square right now.

I lightly pencilled  on my cotton fabric, selected a few colours of thread and green acrylic paint, and the result was this.

The green paint on the left dries well and if used straight from the pot, doesn't bleed (I used freezer paper to mask off the area). I then stitched the tree in mainly French knots and the words in white cotton backstitch.

The colour in the illustration was done with pencil crayons, and the line work simply backstitched. The red lead and the stripes on the cat were stitched, and finally, I made up a short verse about learning to read.

Originally my quilt was going to need many plain squares, but now I want those squares to be stitched Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme book covers. Here's hoping I'll achieve this goal.

I have been focusing on photos of plants and flowers for the entire album and linking these in with definitions and quotes and this month is no exception.

I started as usual by thinking about how this word - achievement - translated to the project and what it made me think of.

I have to say this one came pretty quickly. The photo of the the new leaves unfurling on a horse chestnut tree that I took back in April popped straight into my mind.

I love spring and one of the things that fascinates me is how seemingly dead twigs burst into life.

Now THAT has to be quite some achievement!

Hi, Mandy here...

I decided to focus on my own personal 'crafty' achievement and although I dabble in many different crafts (don't we all?)...making my first quilt was my greatest crafty achievement (to date).  There were so many times I nearly gave up and got 'off-the-scale' frustrated while making it.  I made heaps of mistakes and it didn't turn out anything like the one in the magazine I was copying.  So, even though my first quilt is full of (very noticable) mistakes, I DID finish it and it gets used by all the family to snuggle under and watch DVD's in the winter.  So, this page of my fabric book isn't a page at all but a mini quilt using leftover fabric from 'The Cupcake Quilt'. It's a bit rough because I knocked it up this afternoon but I remembered the joy of free-motion quilting the 'pebbles' or 'bubbles' which was a fave part of making that first quilt. 

It will be tucked-in but loose in the fabric book.  I put a quote on the back which links happiness & achievement...

"Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.

Franklin D.Roosevelt."

 

I wish I'd taken the time to sew the words instead of writing them with pen, but time was short this month.

Hi all tis me, Michelle, sneaking in ‘graciously’ with two entries this month! As time got the better of me last month for the post on graciousness the creative girls, ever full of grace said I could sneak my project in here … ok enough of the play on words and on with the project!

When I was planning my project for graciousness I kept thinking of the three graces so I looked it up and wikipedia gave me this;

Charities – known in Greek mythology as the 3 graces, goddesses of such things as charm, beauty and creativity.

I decided this described the 3 most influential women in my life perfectly

 

My mum, my nanny and my gran!

I decided to make a triptych to echo the 3 idea and made it from corrugated card, ripped and stripped and painted with brown acrylics (eco green paints my new fave rave!) to look a little like wood.

 

I generated the backgrounds in the Serif Digital scrapbook artist 2 programme (another new fave rave of mine!) and had great fun layering up images of statues, greek architecture and script to create my own papers.

 

I cut out the photos in the cut out studio and applied a shabby effect to try and make them ‘belong’ to the papers.

 

Finally some ripping, tearing and inking ‘melded the pieces together and a bit of florists raffia joined the 3 sections of my 3 graces.

And so to moving on to achievement. I thought long and hard about this one, there are lots of forms that achievement could take, many things that I am proud to have achieved in my life but I decided to look further inside of me and record my every day life achievements so far.

 

 

 

And I decided to award myself a certificate from the university of life.

 

 

Again I generated this digitally, complete with my own little university of life shield, before printing it off and adding a little bit of ripping and inking to make it look a little like an old papyrus.

I like the fact this word made me look within myself and record things that have really made me appreciate where I am and who I am today. What achievements are you proud of in your life?

SIMPLE THINGS JUNE *GRACIOUS*

Hello! It's time for Simple Things once again.

Here's Eleanor - The word graciousness is inextricably linked, in my mind, with hands.

Hands show love, and care. We gently soothe with our hands, we uplift and we console.

With our hands we greet, and bid farewell; we lovingly give and we gratefully receive.

Here are my own hands, they are not pretty hands, rather workworn, but I hope they are gracious.

They, and the title, are embroidered simply, and unembellished, for my quilt square this month.

Hi Debbie here with my take on Graciousness. I found this quite difficult so looked in a dictionary and the meaning of graciousness was defined as kind gentle and generous. I found some quotes for each word and mounted them in painted slide mounts.

    

I layered ripped tissue paper to start making the background and layered torn shapes, if you start thinking of squares they will turn out really random. I painted gesso over to tone the colours down a little.

 

I added tissue paper butterflies and green 'flags' for the top and bottom of the page.

 

I cut some slide mounts using a sizzix die and painted them. I used letters cut from magazines for the words.

 

I then added extra detail with a black fine sharpie and a white tippex pen.

As soon as I saw the word it reminded me of a colleague I worked with for a long time. She was a wonderful lady and a great inspiration and I remember, after a particularly trying time at work when i was very cross about soemthing she said that the most important thing was 'To live your life with grace and graciousness.'

I have never forgotten those words and she was a wonderful example of living her life based on that ideal. I have remembered them often when times have been very trying and have tried to emulate her.

It was therefore important to include those words on the page.

 

I have included definitions on my pages and here is the definition for this month.

In keeping witht he flower theme I chose a very delicate flower, appropriate for my friend. It is a picture of blossom in my garden this spring.

Hiya Claire here with my take on this months word Graciousness, I also found this tricky but I do love a challenge, the dictionary definition I found was: having or showing kindness, courtesy & compassion.

I decided I would use a quote for this but after hours of random googling I was still struggling until I saw this snippet from a bible quote... Graciousness begins with a pure heart.

I'm still using the Fancy pants Whimsy paper & I stamped a border using a Banana Frog stamp, then cut a heart from chipboard, painted it red, then sprayed it with Lava Red Cosmic Shimmer Mist & inked the edges with Black Soot distress ink...

I coloured a cream slide frame & some smaller prima blooms with various shades of green & blue, Cosmic Shimmer & Glimmer mists, & added a chipboard piece that says Grace.

  Then I put it all together, the quote was stamped using Banana Frog Stamps & I used another Banana frog stamp for the hearts which I then doodled around with my black pen

Back at the beginning of the year when we began the ‘SIMPLE THINGS’ Project, I decided to make a fabric book and use it to try out new techniques  that I may not have done before.  I also wanted to re-cycle whenever possible.  Well this month I used the cotton print fabric & buttons from a skirt I used to wear about 15 years ago.  I was aiming to make my fabric page sort of like a scrapbook page, but with patterned fabric instead of patterned paper.   The fabric was really too floppy to work with so I used some iron-on interfacing to make it more manageable.  Here’s my page, using the word ‘Grace’...

There’s  some hand-stitching too....

 

The crochet butterfly is my own design (pattern on my blog) and the row of yellow circles is crochet over metal washers.  Like all the previous months, I’ve used a quote and for GRACE I quoted one of my favourite Grace Ministers, Joseph Prince.

 

I can't believe I used to wear a skirt with that pattern (!)

Hi, Caz here!

When we started this project we collected the words. We all gave suggestions and made a list asigning each to a month. Graciousness was my suggestion. I have no idea where it came from and if I even knew what the word meant. It just came and I suggested.

So, roll on June and time to make my page. And there I sat, and sat, and sat some more. NOTHING came, absolutely nothing.

But it's funny how fate leads you down a path you didn't know you needed to be led down. And I am so thankful for this word and it's meaning.

 

I would usually have started this next paragraph with 'I'm not particularly religeous but......' For some reason I feel embarrased about admitting I am religious! I have no idea how or why, and I am certainly going to stop saying it after creating this page. I don't go to church every Sunday and I don't say Grace before my meals but I do believe in the Lord and I do try live my life by his example. I am learning to accept myself and who I am with each passing month of this project. And I love it!!

Quilting Take 2!

You may remember that back in January I wrote about my Quilting Adventures that I was enjoying and Showed you My First Ever Quilt! Since then I have been planning my next little quilt and drooling over fabrics!

This time I will be quilting for my ten year old son, who decided he's like a snuggly quilt too!

I went for Neptune by Tula Pink as it has wonderful sea related designs in yummy shades of blue and greens (and just a teeny bit of salmon pink!). I bought the Layer Cake which consists on 40, 10" x 10" squares- I figured I'd used the 10" squares pretty much whole to show of the wonderful fabric, this would also make it very quick to make up the top piece of the quilt!

So I began by selecting 2 10" squares of green and 2 squares of blue- I sewed them together to make a 2 by 2 square:

I took a dark blue 10" square and ironed some vilene on the back to stop fraying.

I then used a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine to applique this square onto my 2x2 section- I decided to place it on the diagonal!

I made 4 for these sections in total.

Next I created the central section of my quilt:

 

This consisted of 4 10" squares of dark blue sewn together which were bordered with white fabric (2" x 40") inter spaced with 2" x 10" sections of green fabric sewn together in a long length.

Finally I pieced the sections together to give me:

 

Please excuse the creases- It was ironed but was sat on just before I photographed it!!! 

Currently I am adding a centre band to the back piece of the quilt! After that it will be the pinning together with the wadding- hopefully it will be a little less faffy that last time- as I had some great advice from other quilters!

Quilting a Card

As you may remember from my last post I made my first quilt and quite honestly I'm hooked on patchwork and quilting! I already have some new fabric (Neptune by Tula Pink) to start a second quilt- one for my ten year old son!

Whilst I was waiting for the backing fabric for my new quilt to arrive I had the NEED to quilt something small and this is what I made!

 

First I cut a square of the anchor fabric which measured 4.25" square.

 

Next I cut 2 strips of the coral fabric to go along the short edges of the anchor square:

 

These measured 2.25" x 4.25" (cut two) and sew to the anchor square with a 0.25" seam:

 

Finally for the long edges I cut two strips of the coral fabric measuring 7.5" x 2.25"

Pin and then sew to complete the square using a 0.25" seam again.

 

I created a sandwich with my patchwork piece on top of some wadding and a piece of patterned fabric under the wadding.

I tacked or basted these layers together with large stitches in black - this holds the layers together whilst you quilt but are easy to remove when you've finished:

Being a bit more adventurous this time I quilted all over the coral fabric using random swirls:

I used strips of dark blue fabric approx 1.5" wide sewn together to make a long ribbon which I used to bind the edges of the quilt card.

I stamped my mermaid (keeping with the nautical theme of the fabric) onto a scrap of cream material and coloured her using copics.

I ironed her onto some Vilene to stop the edges fraying.

I cut the mermaid out and stitched onto the card along with some Prima flowers with pearls for centres.

All you need to do is add a label or a tag with your birthday greetings on and you have gift/card all in one!

My Little Quilt-adventures in patchwork!

The drooling is over- sewing begins!

So my quilting adventure had begun- I had fabric, I had thread and I had a vague idea of creating a patchwork lap quilt!

After fussing a worrying about doing it WRONG- I decided to use my 5" charm squares to create a series of larger squares.

I machine sewed four 5" squares together, I used a 1.4" seam to join the squares.

 

I then took 2 sets of these patches I created and sewed them together with 2 10" squares from the Layer Cake pack again using a 1/4" seam:

 

Describing the process makes it sound WAY more complicated than it was!!!

It was also REALLY quick to pin the squares and ZIP them together on my old Singer machine.

So my Lap quilt was a series of these patches!

 

Borders:

Next I ironed my quilted top and measured it so I would know how much fabric I'd need for the borders-you can see on the photo above the strip of yellow fabric I added to the borders. 

I also added a second strip of fabric outside the yellow border to make the quilt wider:

 
 I created a back panel for the quilt- I didn't want it to be a plain piece of fabric so I sewed small blocks of 'Happy Campers' fabric to create a patchwork panel to go right across the red fabric I used for the backing. I also added borders of cream fabric so the back panel was the same size as my top piece:

With the top piece and back piece completed I was into the next stage of my quilt- where I added to wadding between the fabric pieces and start quilting them together!

Now I found this stage tricky but I asked for advice and received some top tips from quilter friends:

~Attach your backcloth to the floor/table.

I used masking tape and spread the back piece out on the floor- use pins if you have a carpeted floor!

~Lay the Wadding onto the back piece and lay the top piece onto that.

~Pin the three layers together.

~Use long tacking threads to loosely sew the three layers together as they tend to shift around.

I was going to just use pins to attach the layers but I found the fabric slid around on the wadding causing it to bunch up when I tried to quilt it *groan* therefore it was worth spending the time tacking the layers together!

So currently I am hand quilting along all the seams of my quilt or 'in the ditch' as the jargon goes! Because the three layers are being melded together the quilt is starting to look like a REAL quilt now!!

After the quilting I will be making the strips of fabric to bind the edges of the quilt and finish it all off. I will update you when I get there!

Adventures in Quilting-the drooling stage!

Here is the story of my little quilt!

For a long time I had been admiring the beautiful Jelly Rolls and Layer Cakes by Moda (love the cake references!) and drooling over their loveliness!

Let me explain about Layer Cakes and Jelly Rolls for fabric newbies like myself!

Normally you buy quilting fabric in measures known as Quarters and Fat quarters (there's a lot of new lingo to learn!!) you then choose your own fabrics, colours, patterns etc and work out how much fabric you need for your quilt.

What Moda have done is to create bundles of their co-ordinating fabrics in set amounts- so they have taken a lot of the guess work out the fabric process, which is welcome for a beginner like myself. Also the selection of colours in each bundle is just divine!

I found this MUCH easier to get my brain around!

 Charm Packs are 5"x5" squares (42 squares in a pack)

 Jelly Rolls are strips 2.5" x 45" (40 in a pack)

 Layer Cakes are 10" x 10" squares (42 in a pack)

To make things even easier for new quilters like me there are several BEAUTIFULLY illustrated books out that give you patterns or recipes (to stick with Moda's baking theme!). Search Amazon.co.uk for 'Jelly Rolls' to see how many are available:

 

What made my drooling worse was visiting the LUSH Moda Blog that had all their wares laid out in all their beauty, so last month I finally decided to stop procrastinating and I ordered the Happy Campers Charm Pack (5x5" squares) and a Happy Campers Layer Cake Pack (10x10" squares).

Come quilt with me!

Okay so I need another hobby like I need a hole in the head. But that's what happens when you're a crafter. You just can't stop yourself.

I've been want to try quilting/patchwork for ages. And having found some Amy Butler fat quarters in John Lewis Edinburgh, I thought now was a good time start.

Anyone fancy joining me??

So firstly you need to decide what to make and what pattern you want. I am making a quilt for outside, to use on the grass. And i've decided to make an English hexagon quilt.

I cut my own hexagon using this fab guide. I've used cardstock cause I have a bag full that i'll probably never use for anything else!

 

 

You're going to need hundreds so be sure to keep one handy to use as a template. When cutting your hexagons, you will have drawn around the outside of your template so don't forget to cut on the inside of your pencil lines.

 

There are two ways of doing this next bit. Either pin your hexagons straight to your piece of fabric, or cut your fabric into squares making sure you leave a seam allowance. My hexagon is 3 inches point to point so I have cut my squares 4"x3.5". Once you have pinned your hexagons to the squares you can trim the fabric into shape.

 

 

Now you need to tac your fabric to the hexagon. Use big stitches and a contrasting colour as you'll need to eventually take it out.

 

I've used a whip stitch (it's all new to me!) to sew the hexagons together into a 'flower'. Each 'flower' consists of a centre and 6 petals.

 

And now you keep going until you have enough to put it all together.

This is a learn as you go project so i've no idea what happens when i've got all the flowers I need. I'll check back in on the 19th of September with progress.
