Hi from Caz!
For me Crochet is a very spring/summer past time. Maybe because I like to crochet using cotton, or my crochet projects are small, and not heavy or hot to do. Now actually I need to clarify that because my blankets were big, BUT each square is small. And they are easy to do while sitting out in the sun.
Which is exactly were I was sitting when I made this little crochet corsage, or decoration for summer hat! I have worn it as both :)
I've used Rowan handknit cotton.
It really is easy to make.
Here is the pattern.
Your yarn will determine the size of crochet hook you use. I used a 3.5mm. Your yarn and hook will also determine the finished size of your corsage. If you have a selection of hooks then you can try the first few rounds to see which suits.
Flower
Foundation round: Chain 4 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring.
Round 1: 1 chain (does not count as first stitch) 8 DC into the ring. Join with a slip stitch into the 1st DC. (8 stitches)
Round 2: 1 chain and 1 DC into the same space. 2 DC into each of the DC from the previous round. Join with a slip stitch into the 1st DC (15 stitches)
Round 3: 4 chain, miss two DC and DC into the next DC. *3 chain, miss two DC and DC into next DC. repeat *2 times. 3 chain and slip stitch into the second chain at the start of the round.
You should now have 5 chain spaces to form your first round of petals.
Round 4: 1 chain (does not count as 1st stitch). Now into each chain space do the following. 1DC, 3 Treble, 1DC. Join with a slip stitch into the 1st DC of the round.
At this point I fastened off and rejoined the yarn to the back of the first row of petals. It was my preference as I found it quite hard to get a smooth finish when trying to make my corsage in one piece. It's also a good place to change colour if you're making a colourful corsage!
Round 5: With a slip knot, rejoin the yarn to the back of the stitch inbetween the petals, (It looks like the stitch is split. This will ensure the second row of stitches sits directly behind the first). *4 chain and slip stich into that same stitch between the next two petals. Repeat * 3 times. 4 chain and slip stitch into slip stitch at the beginning of the round.
If it feels like the petals will pull tight, it's fine! You want the petals to 'stand up' a bit.
Round 6: 1 chain (does not count as first stitch). Into each chain space, 1DC, 4 Treble, 1DC. Join with a slip stitch into the first DC of the first petal.
Again I fastened off.
Round 7: As round 5 but chain 5 instead of 4.
Round 8: 1 chain (does not count as 1st stitch). Into each chain space, 1DC, 1 half treble, 6 treble, 1 half treble, 1DC. Join with a slip stitch into the first DC of the first petal.
Fasten off.
Your flower of finished. Sew your ends in.
Leaves
I made two different sizes. I'll give you the pattern for the larger one, and you can adjust if you want a smaller one (just do everything less 2 IYKWIM).
Foundation Row: 11 chain
Row 1: DC into the second stitch from the hook. Continue to DC into each chain from the foundation row. TURN ( The foundation row and row 1 form the centre 'spine' of your leaf)
Row 2: 3 chain (counts as 1st stitch) *1 treble into next DC. repeat * 6 times. DC into each of the next two DCs from row 1. (these two DCs will form the 'point' of your leaf.)
Slip stitch into the 10th chain from your foundation row to move across to make the other side of the leaf.
Row 3: 2 DC into the 'bottom' of the next two chain (You are now working from the point of the leaf back the start of the foundation row). 8 treble into each of the next 8 chain.
Fasten off.
And now to finish off:
Sew your leaves to the back of the flower.
Sew a decorative button to the centre of the flower.
Attach a brooch pin to a piece of felt.
Now stitch the felt to the back of your corsage ( I found this far easier than trying to stitch the brooch pin directly to the back of the flower!)
I will work on a step by step with photos if anyone finds it easier to work with pictures. I know I do!
Thanks for visiting and haPPy hOOking!
